Prayer is indispensable for ministry. The call to ministry is a prayer (Luke 10:2), power in ministry is a prayer (John 14:16), provision for ministry is a prayer (Matthew 7:7), endurance for ministry is a prayer (Luke 21:36), and success in ministry is a prayer (John 12:28, 17:20). “Only the work accomplished with much prayer, and sanctified by the merit of Christ, will in the end prove to have been efficient for good.” (The Desire of Ages, 362.)
When we pray while serving the Lord, we recognize our nothingness and express our complete dependence on God. Jesus said, “I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.” (John 15:5). While doing his mission on earth, Christ lived a life of prayer. Jesus did not depend on his inherent power but he fully surrendered to the Father. This is the example that He wants us to follow.
Often times our prayers are focused on ourselves. There is this sweet prayer that we all need to learn, “O that one might plead for a man with God, as a man pleadeth for his neighbour!” (Job 16:21).
